Pheasant shooting in the Surrey countryside

A few days before Christmas, 2004 at a King Henry VIII hunting lodge on the Lord Cowdray Estate in Surrey.  Birds are bred on the farm for this purpose. Locals, families and farm workers act as 'beaters' and drive the birds through the woods by making noise and banging trees with sticks. When the birds reach the edge of the woods they take to flight. Here they are met by the 'Guns'. Often the Guns will have loaders who will have prepared the second set of cartridges to go in the barrel to improve the fire rate. There are strict rules on both safety and etiquette... and unspoken rules on dress and transport.  A little like the golf course this is a place where like-minded people meet and pay handsomely for the privilege.
